Margaret Scanlan Portraits

portrait commissions in pencil, pastel and watercolour

I studied at Brighton College of Art and spent 10 years illustrating children's books. More recently I have concentrated on portraiture, working on commissions for portraits of people, animals and houses.

My love of portraiture began as a young child. As well as filling my sketchbooks with drawings of my family and anyone else that happened to be visiting, I also spent many hours depicting the family cat. At art college I continued to draw portraits, but turned to book illustration as a career. It was after I started painting my own children when they were babies that I began to take on portrait commissions. I love to capture the character of my subjects, the unique expressions that are present in the faces of everyone from the tiniest of babies to wise grandparents and beloved pets.
